How to save water in the garden

We benefit the community by saving water and reducing water storage, treatment, and distribution costs.  Some of these suggestions may seem obvious, but sometimes we just need a reminder ~

Children: Be an eco-friendly role model. Make children aware of the need to conserve water.  Do not buy toys that waste water.

Compost: Save water by using compost as it improves water retention.

Dip the soil around the plants: Use less water by making channels around plants, by pressing down the soil around the plant, which helps to collect and retain water.

Drip irrigation: Water irrigation systems save water by delivering water directly to the roots. Shut off your irrigation system during rainy weather.

Find out more about your plants: Watering, too little or too much, is the main reason for plants failing. Some plants wither in soggy soil, whilst others thrive, so it is best to find out about their watering needs.

Group similar plants together: Plants have different watering requirements, so try group plants with similar watering needs together.

Landscape design: Design your landscape so that is minimises water running off onto hard surfaces or into storm drains.

Lawnmowing: Save water by reducing the number of times you cut the lawn. Raise the cutting level on your lawnmower.  Taller grass shades roots and retains moisture and saves energy.

Mimic nature: Give plants more water less often, instead of frequent little sprinkles.  More water less often is a more efficient, because frequent light watering may lead to shallow rooting.

Nozzle head / spray gun: Finer sprinkle settings will prevent water from moving soil away from plants and roots.  Some guns have an instant and on/off control. Water only as fast as the soil can absorb the water.

Plant and lawn decisions: Consider growing drought-tolerant plants and lawns. Consider turf mix lawns. Select plant and lawn varieties that best suit your climate. For example, planting Echinaceas (or cone flower), drought tolerant perennials.

Reduce water evaporation: Water early morning or early evening, and create shaded areas with large plants or structures.  Water when there is dew around, so that the dew falls into the plant instead of evaporating in the sun. Avoid watering when it is windy as the water is more likely to blow away and evaporate

Save rainwater: Collect rainwater from the roof, via the gutters, and into a water butt. Don’t collect water if your roof or gutters are made of lead.

Stop drips: Save water by changing tap washers, check for leaks, and repair sprinklers and hoses.

Sweep clean: Instead of hosing or power washing paths and driveways use a broom and sweep clean.

Test soil: If you cannot form a clod in your hand, increase your watering, unless it is a plant that thrives in soggy soil.

Weather: Check the weather forecast, to avoid watering just before it rains.

Weeds:  Weeds compete for water.  Remove weeds and consider adding organic mulch or compost to minimise weed growth and retain more moisture.   If you remove nettles, remove the roots and keep the leaves as they can be added to your water butt, or place the leaves around plants to help retain moisture and to enrich the soil.  Stinging nettles are nutrient rich and make a great natural fertiliser / liquid feed.

HOW TO MAKE A NATURAL WEIGHT LOSS DRINK

Three Ingredients: 1.   One tablespoon of fennel seeds (5.8 g ~ 20 calories; only seven calories from fat) 2.  One cup of boiled water 3.  Juice of one lemon

Process: Steep the fennel seeds in boiled water for at least 15 minutes (until lukewarm/tepid).  Add the lemon juice.

FOR OPTIMUM RESULTS  Best to drink on an empty stomach, and don’t eat for 30 minutes after drinking.
